Abstract:
This paper provides an overview of the research progress made by international organizations regarding the tritium safety and protection standards system. It introduces relevant standards, reports, and technical documents published by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This paper reviews the evolution of tritium safety and protection standards in ICRP publications from Publication 72 (1996) to Publication 137 (2017), as well as IAEA reports from 1989 to 2014 on typical environmental behavior of tritium. It summarizes the guidance values for tritium in the environment and the effluent discharge limits for nuclear facilities reported by UNSCEAR, and briefly describes the tritium measurement method standards and other radiation protection standards reported by ISO. The authors point out that the series of achievements by international organizations in tritium safety management have played a significant role in promoting and guiding the development of tritium safety and protection standards systems in countries worldwide.
