Interpretation and inspiration of "three types of radioactive waste" management in nuclear medicine practice based on national and international standards

Abstract: With the rapid development of nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatment technologies, the scope of their clinical applications has been continuously expanding. However, the problems of treating radioactive waste gas, liquid waste, and solid waste (collectively referred to as the "three types of radioactive waste") generated therefrom have gradually become prominent, and have become core bottleneck restricting the sustainable development of the industry. The authors aim to systematically sort out and conduct a comparative analysis of the solutions recommended by international organizations such as the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the International Commission on Radiological Protection. By reviewing and analyzing the solutions of international organization and combination with the current standards in China, such as the "Requirements for Radiation Protection and Safety in Nuclear Medicine" (HJ 1188—2021) and the "Basic Standards for Protection Against Ionizing Radiation and for the Safety of Radiation Sources" (GB 18871—2002), this paper explores the optimized paths of the treatment solution for the "three types of radioactive waste" in nuclear medicine in China, so as to facilitate the sustainable development of the nuclear medicine industry.
